Dramatic landscapes, quaint villages and imperial cities capture the timeless culture of the Bavarian and Austrian Alps.
You can see Jeff Oechslein’s forecast weekday mornings on NEWS9 Sunrise and NEWS9 Midday. Working NEWS9 Sunrise means waking up at 3 a.m. every morning, but he loves his job and more importantly, loves weather.
Jeff became fascinated with the weather at an early age growing up in nearby Bethel Park, PA. He made his own weather maps and turned the family basement into a TV studio. His dream and goal was to become a TV meteorologist.
Jeff pursued his goal by attending Penn State University in 1993, studying meteorology. While in college, he interned at WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh. He graduated from Penn State in 1998 and the very next day delivered his first forecast on WTOV9.
When Jeff’s not at work he enjoys spending time with his wife, Amber. They are both huge Steelers fans.
Jeff previously hosted the Holiday Vacations’ Great California Train Adventure, New England Cruise, Alaska and Hawaii tours. He invites you to join him and other WTOV9 viewers on this exciting trip to Austria & Germany!

Upon arrival in Munich, we meet our European Guide and Driver. Enjoy the leisurely drive to the mountainous region of Kitzbühel, Austria. Unpack and settle in for four delightful nights at our comfortable hotel. Tonight we are guests at a get acquainted dinner. D
Our sightseeing today features the Tyrolean ski capital of Innsbruck. Surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes and picturesque villages, Innsbruck has been the site of two Winter Olympics, most recently in 1976. Narrow, twisting streets and tall houses built in the Late Gothic style reflect the city’s medieval past. During our visit to Innsbruck we have time to browse and shop as well as look for exquisite pieces of Austrian Crystal. Sightseeing includes the Court Church, one of the most impressive monuments in Europe. This structure houses the empty tomb of Maximilian I. We also see the Goldenes Dachl (“Golden Roof”), an ornate stone balcony covered by gilded copper tiles, built in the 15th century. In later days, it was used by royalty to watch events in the square below. We return to our hotel for dinner. B,D
Located along the Salzach River, Salzburg is the beautiful city that was featured in the movie, The Sound of Music. Salzburg is also known for its Renaissance and baroque architecture and was the birthplace of Mozart in 1756. This morning we visit exquisite Mirabell Gardens, featuring impressive landscaping, terraces, marble statues and fountains. Our sightseeing in Salzburg continues with a visit to the Old Town. This picturesque area of the city is home to quaint, winding streets and unique shops. Following our city tour, the remainder of the day is at your leisure before returning to the hotel in Kitzbühel. We visit the beautiful mountain setting of the Berchtesgaden area and tour a local salt mine. In former times, salt from mines such as this created great wealth for many nearby cities. Later this afternoon we are special guests at an old-fashioned Austrian farm where animals graze in high mountain pastures and wear cowbells so they may be easily located. We’ll also sample meat and cheeses made fresh on the farm. We return to Kitzbühel and enjoy a festive Tyrolean dinner show this evening. B,D
Today includes a classic steam train ride before we enjoy a memorable boat cruise on the Achensee, the largest and deepest lake in the Tyrolean Alps. The trip will be an unforgettable and romantic experience up to the crystal clear Lake Achensee. To get there you’ll have to overcome a mountain - which a train can only accomplish with the help of cog wheels. Our travels continue into neighboring Germany and the picturesque Bavarian Alps region to Oberammergau. The city is famous for its production of the Passion Play and its decorative homes. Our accommodations for the next three evenings are in the Bavarian Alps area of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. B,D
The fun-loving city of Munich welcomes us today. During a sightseeing drive we view some of the city’s landmarks including Nymphenburg Palace and stop to see the Glockenspiel animated clock in the Marienplatz. This town square is the traditional old city center. Enjoy lunch and the afternoon at Munich’s Oktoberfest, one of the biggest folk fairs in Europe. Join in the celebration or listen and watch the entertainment. B,L
We visit Neuschwanstein, one of the most recognized castles in the world. Commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in the mid-1800’s, its gothic architecture and majestic setting is most famous as the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Later we explore the charming town of Füssen, noted as the last stop of Germany’s Romantic Road. Tonight we share laughter and vacation highlights with our new friends at an included farewell dinner. B,D
We depart the Bavarian Alps for the Munich International Airport. We return home with memories of our wonderful alpine adventure. B
